Queen Insemination

Controlled mating is essential to achieve the goals of any honeybee breeding program. Honeybees present a unique challenge because queens mate in flight with around 15 to 20 drones and therefore mating is difficult to control. Instrumental insemination otherwise known as Artificial insemination provides a valuable tool to control the random mating process and is essential for bee breeding and research requiring specific crosses, single drone insemination with Varroa sensitive Hygiene, VSH, hygienic bees and,  special traits like higher production or/and gentleness. We can keep pedigree lines, pure breeds of bees and instrumental insemination is essential for selection. My reason for starting insemination was poor weather for mating in the UK and substantially increasing the number of weeks per year we can produce mated queen bees. At our apiaries in Portugal, we rear queens for 10 months a year and we sell our pedigree bees most of the year. Our kits and equipment are constantly improving and our training is based on gathering many years worth of knowledge of insemination from many different queen bee inseminators.
